Birthday Celebrations with a Patisserie Cake

Happy Birthday to me! This year I thought I would be organised and order a cake from the Swiss Patisserie in Subiaco, Chez Jean Claude. The family were meeting at our place followed by dinner in Chinatown, Northbridge.

The very tiny patisserie has a fairly large website of many choices of desserts, breads and pastries. Through the website you can also specify when to pick up your purchase, I think at least 24 hours is required.

I picked up my cake first thing in the morning at 7:00 am, the patisserie was busy and as I waited for the cake to be bought out from the kitchen I watched the bakers hurriedly working dough, constructing tarts and applying the finishing touches to torte cakes.

The Opera cake consisted of thin layers of chocolate ganache, light almond biscuit and coffee butter cream. Chocolate buttons, gold glitter and bright yellow flowers were decorated on the top of the cake.

It really was a beautiful coffee cake, the family enjoyed it and I indulgently ate almost the whole thing over the days to follow, you know when things are out of control when you start replacing your morning muesli with a piece of cake!  In saying that the cake pairs perfectly with a short black espresso.
