Little Bird Cafe, Northbridge

The oh-so satisfying journey from discovery to desire to dining to satisfaction. This kind of sums up the experience at The Little Bird Cafe in Northbridge earlier this morning. We had initially set out on the bicycles destined for East Perth however passing through Northbridge and stumbling across the Lake Street positioned café we were allured in by the sign – coffee!

As we approached the counter I immediately noticed the tempting array of cakes and raw slices, definitely a place to bookmark for a future coffee and cake date. Although I was really only after a coffee, the breakfast menu at The Little Bird looked good with a couple of interesting items standing out and I ended up ordering the buckini dish.

The buckinis was served with a side of homemade almond milk.  The ingredients were fresh to eat and the coconut cream inside the poached pear was a nice surprise. I loved the soft texture of the cashew paste with the hard buckinis. Seeds and fruit should never be underestimated, it was incredibly filling and there was loads of flavour with each spoonful.

Admittedly, I had no idea what buckini was and thought it was mini pancakes! On investigation following the delicious meal I found out Buckini is activated buckwheat, it looks like cereal but buckini isn’t even a grain. Rather, a fruit seed. Ideal for someone with a sensitive stomach to grains.

The long macchiato (3 quarters) was temperature hot and strong in aroma, a nice layer of crema and milk. The Little Bird use Pound Coffee beans, a small company based in O’Connor, Western Australia.

The Little Bird Cafe also stock a number of the Rawsome rawbles treats, these are delicious with a coffee. The treats are raw, gluten free, grain free, egg free, dairy free, soy free and paleo- quite a mouthful!

The Little Bird Café offers a relaxed dining area, I loved the courtyard space watching the scene unfold on Lake street in the morning. The staff were really energetic and friendly.

A couple of years ago, I wouldn’t have really thought to venture to Northbridge for coffee but the nightlife district is quickly turning into a coffee and breakfast district. I love it! The Little Bird Café is around the corner from Northbridge Piazza, a beautiful little space and also where you’ll find San Churros and the newly opened Northbridge brewing Co.
