Aussie Morning Tea in Shenton Park
This morning spared us a little time between preparing the apartment for new airbnb guests and greeting them on arrival, earlier on we had rushed out the door without a sip of espresso or even a bite of breakfast and now we were a couple of hungry souls needing a swift refuel pit stop. We called in at Lawley’s Bakery located in the lovely tree lined suburb of Shenton Park, a short drive from Subiaco.
A guest once asked me if I could recommend a couple of Australian cuisine dishes and I drew a blank for a few moments. Australia is made up of many cultures and a multitude of delicious cuisines. This had me thinking and as I recalled the days of growing up in Perth and my favourite past times certain foods sprung to mind. There was sausages on the BBQ in the backyard, mussels caught in Mandurah, meat pies, sausage rolls, vegemite toast, lamingtons and pavlova. It would be interesting to know yours!
Lamingtons and vegemite are two iconic Australian foods. They were always on the canteen blackboard at primary school and ‘lamington drives’ were a big fundraiser event every school year for the parent teacher committee. Our morning tea of two long macchiatos, a lamington and vegemite scroll cost $13.80. I would say this is reasonable for the western suburbs of Perth. The scroll pastry with its salty vegemite paste was just delicious. The soft sponge Lamington covered in a chocolate sauce and coconut shavings satisfied my sweet tooth.
The food is baked in the kitchen behind the counter, most of it is ready to go from cakes to sausage rolls to continental rolls to breakfast burgers. Lawleys offer a simple canteen style café environment and the dine in coffee is good. They also have a breakfast menu.
Lawley’s Bakery have their own signature blend of coffee. Our long macs which we ordered to be three quarters topped up had a nice dense layer of milk froth. The coffee was strong. A small petite sized biscuit was served complimentary with the coffees, this we loved.
