Chalkys Espresso Bar

Chalkys Espresso Bar is located at number 1 High Street in the Heritage listed Fremantle Municipal Tramways Building.  Arriving early on a chilly morning we noticed the tables at the front of the cafe received the morning sun and this is where we took up our seats. Bringing back a little spirit of the Fremantle working port days the walls of the cafe have some great graphics of ship liners and well known Freo buildings. My Dad would love this place!

No more than a couple of minutes passed by and our Dukes roasted coffees ($3.80 each) and slice of carrot cake was delivered to the table. For $5.50 this was the largest carrot cake slice I have come across in a Perth cafe. The coffees were fantasticly good and we were fork fighting over the cake.  Chalkys Espresso Bar offer an all day brunch menu and having a quick look the death by benedict sounds like a dish I will order next time.

I spent much of my childhood in Fremantle but to tell you the truth the West End of Fremantle has not seen me in a few years.  The beautiful heritage buildings that were always empty and closed up for so many years now have a little life inside them. The area houses local artist shops, bookstores, cute little gift stores and espresso cafes. The West End remains a peaceful section of Fremantle and with this lovely cafe I can see myself returning for a few more espressos.

Directly opposite the Chalkys Espresso Bar is the historical Round House, the oldest building in Western Australia. The Round House was built by convicts in 1830 as a gaol. It is free to the public to wander around and gives some great views over Bathers Beach.

Below is a picture found on my great uncle Basil’s camera many years ago, it was taken sometime in the 1960’s. I thought it would be pretty cool to share so that if you happen to go past the area you’ll see not much has changed!

There are a number of artist studios nearby and a boardwalk along the beach. A cycle path continues to the Fremantle Port area and in the opposite direction to the Fishing Boat Harbour. It really is a lovely and peaceful area to walk around, did I mention it is winter?
