Tea for Tú, Northbridge

Wandering along William Street it is easy to miss the shop fronts that at first glance look small but in reality they are anything but small, appearance is not everything in Northbridge and never has it been!  William street is lined with fashion boutiques, cafes and restaurants, look closely and there is also life in the arcades, lanes, a rooftop and in the rear of a boutique fashion and lifestyle store called Tú.

Tú which translates to illustration in Mandarin and you in Spanish, French and Italian sell a range of fashion, accessories and unique lifestyle products in store as well as through their online store. In addition to the cafe there is also a stairwell art gallery.

Tea for Tú, currently serve coffee, tea and sweets. It should be noted no warm foods are available, I guess you could call it a tea parlour. They brew up an incredible green tea latte in an iced or hot form and stock several cakes from the local French patisserie, Choux Cafe as well as homemade ones.

We entered through the shop entrance from William Street and not really knowing where to go we asked the lady behind the counter, she pointed towards a door and said ‘The cakes have just been baked this morning so please enjoy.’ In one of the prettiest rooms I have seen was a glass cabinet displaying a small selection of cupcakes, tarts and cakes. The coffee machine and barista were a sight for sore eyes, having battled for parking I needed a coffee more than ever. It was a welcoming little space and felt very much like being at a friend’s house down the road.

To show you this cosy little space I have borrowed a photo from the tú website (please see below).

Having ordered our coffees and making the thoughtful selection of cakes we continued to ascend the stairs to an outdoor area that backs onto Lock Lane and is also adjacent to the entrance of the rooftop Mechanics’ Institute Small Bar which opens from midday. At 10:00 am on a Saturday morning, we had the outside area to ourselves, it was a little haven, was so peaceful and felt like a lazy Sunday and not a crazy errand running Saturday.

The lemon tart was handmade by a local French patisserie and it was a perfect citrus delight, the lemon custard was smooth and the crust moist and not dry at all.

Red Velvet Cupcake

Velvet cupcake

The homemade red velvet cupcake was fluffy and light in texture and the butter cream had a pleasant hint of a lemon tang to it, it was nothing short of absolutely delicious.

Long Mac

DD’s long mac was certainly a robust coffee, my milky cappuccino was nothing in comparison. I think next time I will order the Long Mac as it was just too good.

The cafe operates on cash only but the guy did mention that you can pay inside the store.

The local French Patisserie that supplies a few of the cakes is called Choux Cafe. View our visits here.

Parking is a real pain! Congested traffic combined with limited parking options is not the best. My suggestion is to park a little bit out of the central Northbridge area or park in the city and walk across the horse shoe bridge. Cycling is also handy, why not park at Kings Park and cycle in?  After our visit I discovered that William Street is now a two way street for traffic, I think/hope this will ease the traffic pains.

Here are a few places worth stopping in for along William Street;

Mechanics’ Institute. Small Bar.

A rooftop bar with a burger bar downstairs.

Kakula Bros

A continental grocer selling a wide range of cooking ingredients for every type of international cuisine. Coffee beans, herbal teas and chocolates are also a few other items in the store. There is a small deli inside and a takeaway coffee window. Cafe Couture’s visit to Kakula Bros.

Is Donburi

A tiny Japanese store that sells takeaway hand rolls for $3.00 and has a great menu full of bento box choices, creative sushi rolls and a variety of Udon noodle selections. A great little place to grab a quick bite to eat.

Jus Burgers

A trendy burger bar where all the produce is fresh and locally made. The burgers are huge and try the Kangaroo Burger!

Superstar Waffles

This is what I call a waffle cafe serving a range of waffles such as warm apple pie.

Little Willys

A tiny cafe that serves breakfast and lunch, this place is known for the coffee and their breakfast burritos. Excellent service.

The Moon

A retro diner open until the wee hours of the morning. They have a full menu including alcoholic drinks.
