Gusto Gelato, Leederville

A handful of gelato places can be found in Perth and now there is Gusto Gelato in the colourful neighbourhood of Leederville.

Although the name gelato translates to ice cream in Italian, it differs slightly to the traditional creamy and fluffy ice cream. It’s crafted from a varying technique and served at a warmer temperature, hence the softer texture. Ice cream or gelato, I do love them both and it’s a delight to have a new gelato store in Perth particularly one that is open till late.

On a Tuesday evening Leederville is vibrant with many people wandering around enjoying the late evening.  I adore the random chair installations on the street and the new Oxford Street Reserve park is also pretty cool. Since my last visit only just last year there are a couple of new eateries in the vicinity and troubles of finding a good coffee at night is certainly not troublesome anymore.

Gelato at Gusto is handmade using quality and real ingredientsI dislike using the word ‘real’ in my posts to describe fresh unaltered foods. In a perfect world, all food should be preservative, artificial flavour and colour free!

The artisan small batch gelato is made using Italian recipes and methods. It was difficult to choose from the scrumptious looking flavours. Mint choc chip or apple pie? Chocolate fudge brownie or lemon lime & bitters? Chocolate based or fruit based? Both maybe – strawberry with dark chocolate?

We shared three scoops of the white chocolate with raspberry, salted caramel and mascarpone with cocoa. The gelato was delectable, every mouthful was smooth and flavoursome, the consistency was perfectly dense which is key to gelato. My favourite was the salted caramel, a very strong gelato flavour. The mascarpone with cocoa was a good choice to pair with salted caramel.

One scoop  of gelato was $5.00 and two scoops was $8.00. In retrospect the two scoops options is more value for only $3.00 more. A take home pack is $12.00.

Gelato Gusto also have a nice shiny coffee machine and we’ll have to return for an espresso sometime.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and genuinely interested in everyone’s choices.
