Sandalwood Luxury Villas, Koh Samui

I had booked a few nights on the island of Koh Samui for Dk’s last few days in his twenties. Koh Samui is a little tropical island off Thailand, it resembles a seaside town with one 51km long circular road wrapping around the island and calm blue waters from as far as the eye can see. The terrain is hilly and the jungle is green and lush. There are stunning bays to discover and the best way to get around the island apart from a taxi is by motorbike or jeep.

Sandalwood Luxury Villas is a boutique establishment of ten luxurious private villas set very high on a mountainside in Chaweng. Being ’boutique’ the resort offers guests a personal well thought out service from supplying a beach bag to packing a breakfast for early morning departures.

Plant life at the hotel

All ten villas are cleverly hidden throughout the estate in the tropical garden setting and we only really saw other hotel guests at breakfast or in the open air reception area, we experienced privacy whilst staying at the resort that I know I would struggle to find at a 5 star hotel.

Our  villa was called the Plumeria villa and it was a one bedroom apartment with an incredible view across the Gulf of Thailand and the island itself. Our lovely Thai decorated villa was fitted with a spacious bedroom, kitchenette area, bathroom (well designed with a door linking to the patio for easy access from the pool), patio, small plunge pool, sun deck and lounge area. It was a big enough space for us to relax and enjoy our time together. We ordered room service a few times and drank our bottle of Moet champagne by our pool, I love saying that- our pool!

Time wound down for us in Koh Samui and for the first time on a holiday we did not use the internet or the ipad, there was no need, the villa had everything we needed and that view, well you could sit there for hours looking out. During the day we would motorcycle around the island and return before the afternoon showers started. When the afternoon monsoon appeared from behind the hills we were reading by the pool or having a nap. In the evening we would head back onto the motorcycle into Bophut or Chaweng for dinner and drinks, as well as some shopping.

Breakfast was included daily and served in the open air restaurant or in the room, the choice was ours. We never ordered it in the room as we enjoyed eating at the restaurant, in the morning there was a nice breeze and the different view of the hillside was also interesting to watch. We sat each morning planning our motorbike activities. Unlike the bigger chain hotels, the restaurant is intimate and we were greeted by the same staff every day. Breakfast was made to order with two choices of Western and Asian. It was lovely and the coffee was hot and black!

As the villas are set on the hilltop they are obviously not on the beach however there is a private beach down below called Coral Cove Beach. The beach is shared by several holiday resorts and the hotel staff will drive guests down to the beach. It is a 5 minute drive. Coral Cove Beach was something that I had wanted on our trip, a quiet and secluded beach that we could spend a few hours in the sun. The beach was calm, clean and quiet. There was a small cafe with seating, umbrellas along the beach to use, kayak hire and a massage area.

The biggest draw card was the view and the private small pool! Sunrise, daylight, sunset and the evening sky were beautifully captured from Plumeria Villa.

We had no issues riding the hired motorcycle into Chaweng and Bophut each night for dinner as well as up and down the hill to reach the resort.

To describe the experience at Sandalwood Luxury Villas I would say expect an intimate experience away from the lights and disco dances. You will see the same warm and friendly staff members each day, they are the ones that will look after you during the stay. You will leave relaxed and you may even be sad to bid everyone farewell when it is time to department. You will be treated well.
